Direct Thermal Barcode Label Printers use heat to register an impression on the label. These printers do not use ribbons and are generally less expensive. The label will fade over time or in sunlight. These printers are very popular in retail and basic labeling applications.

Thermal Transfer Barcode Label Printers use a thermal transfer ribbon that contains wax-based ink. Heat is applied to the ribbon using a thermal print head that melts the ink transferring it to the paper where it is permanent after it cools. These labels are permanent and are popular for ID applications and outdoor retail. Most thermal transfer printers can also print in direct thermal mode.
